When Sammy was two years old, she was diagnosed with ALL, a form of blood cancer. She then relapsed two days before her sixth birthday. Both times, Sammy was treated at NYU by Dr. Carroll and an incredible nursing staff that helped her every step of the way. Most of all though, she couldn’t have done it without her family. The courage and strength she showed every day as a child is exemplified through her lively and hardworking spirit today. Sammy is an inspiring example of someone who battled cancer (twice) as a child and came out strong and ready to give back. But it wasn’t easy. She struggled through hardships time and time again. Her parents and those around her sacrificed so much to help her battle this evil disease. “Still,” she remarks, “they managed to bring me silly forms of entertainment like clowns and artistic extracurriculars which gave me strength to get through both physical and emotional battles.” Today, she wants to give back. She wants to help children in situations like her by spreading joy and giving purpose to young children fighting diseases at NYU. When sharing this revelation with Ari, a lifelong school friend, they had the idea of creating a nonprofit. Ari created her first poem in 2020 as a ten-year-old. She continued to create poems as her heart desired. With the help of her parents, she created a website to share these poems with the world. After her parents divorce, she expressed a growing gratitude for the ability to have something like poetry to express her feelings. Partnering with Sammy, she hopes to give people their version of poetry. “I have no idea what it’s like to go through something like that [cancer],” she says, “but even when going through small hardships, having a way to express my feelings and share my talents with the world was a blessing I wish to give kids who struggled or are struggling like Sammy.”
